1 How do humans observe and explore space?
Exploring space Chapter 19 Lesson 1 How do humans observe and explore space? Test Friday, August 24, 2018

2 What do you think? Get ready to read!
1. Astronomers put telescopes in space to be closer to the stars. Agree Disagree 2. Telescopes can work using only visible light.

3 Vocabulary Electromagnetic spectrum Refracting telescope
Reflecting telescope Radio telescope

4 Guiding Questions What is meant by space and where do you think space begins? Infer how you think humans first observed and explored space. Why would scientist want to put a telescope into space? In what other ways do scientists observe and explore space?

5 Jot Notes( Ch19 L1) A reflecting telescope uses a curved mirror to focus light rays for observation, while a refracting telescope uses a lens to bend the light ray. Electromagnetic spectrum represents the broad range of wavelengths of radiant energy. A radio telescope is a telescope made to detect invisible radio waves that penetrate Earth’s atmosphere.

6 Jot Notes (Ch19 L1 ct) Hubble orbits Earth and makes images using visible wavelengths. The James Webb Space Telescope will orbit the Sun and use infrared wavelengths. Telescopes are built on mountaintops because more wavelengths of light are viewable at higher altitudes. Mountain tops are also usually far away from city lights.

7 Jot Notes (Ch19 L1 ct) Many types of electromagnetic waves do not penetrate Earth’s atmosphere, so telescopes are placed above the atmosphere. Gamma waves reach about 25km above Earth Surface Radio wave, microwave, low-energy infrared wave, and optical telescopes could be used atop Mount Everest. Optical telescopes work better in space because there are no gases in space to distort images, the sky is darker, and there is no weather in space.

8 Jot Notes (Ch19 L1 ct) The Hubble telescope gets the power it needs from the solar panels, which are the winglike features perpendicular to the telescopes main housing The Hubble telescope is the only telescope that collects visible light to form images of objects in space. The Hubble telescope is the only space telescope that orbits Earth. The Spitzer Space Telescope collects infrared waves The James Webb Space Telescope will use infrared waves to study the oldest, coldest parts of the universe, which no longer emit visible light.
