Vocabulary Freedom of Religion - A person has the right to practice their religion without fear Social Contract - An agreement by which people create a government Consent of the Governed - A government must get the approval of the people to be legitimate Separation of Powers - “Checks and balances” - Separates the government into three branches to prevent one from gaining too much power

From the Dark Ages Comes the EnLIGHTenment
1600’s Europe, people started to challenge long-held beliefs Intellectual movement - philosophers reexamined ideas about society. Used Skepticism (questioning attitude) to challenge the establishment Earth wasn’t the center of the universe Religious wars challenged religions place in people’s lives People started meeting to have PHILOSOPHICAL discussions about politics, religion, rights, government "Dare to know! Have courage to use your own reason!"

About the Enlightenment
There were MANY different Enlightenment thinkers – who had VERY different ideas! They did share: Reason - the power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgments by a process of logic Left behind superstitions of the dark ages Natural Laws - Certain laws are inherent (belonging by nature) Impacts government, society, religion and economics
