This is a brief introduction to the Explorer Young Leader Scheme, to explain the scheme, what it is all about, the rewards and your commitment. Being a YL is not going to be suitable or appeal to everyone but if you do not try you will never really know.

3 What/Who Are You ? YL’s are the Scout Leaders of the Future.
Explorer Scouts or DOE volunteer 14 – Years Old Registered with a District Explorer Unit Invested if an Explorer Scout Wear Uniform if an Explorer Scout Help in Beaver Colonies, Cub Packs or Scout Troops YL’s are the Scout Leaders of the Future. Without Adult Leaders there is no Scouting ! There will always be enough young people and there will always be a shortage of GOOD Leaders

4 What Do You Do? Opportunity to Join In with Other Scout Units
Meet as a Separate YL Unit for monthly module training. Take Part in the YL Progressive Training Scheme Gain Platinum & Diamond Chief Scout’s Awards Work Towards the Queen’s Scout Award Gain Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards

5 What is the YL Scheme ? You Commit to Specific Leadership Training.
It counts towards your adult leadership training. Module A, Compulsory within 3 months of starting as a Young Leader with a Section. Modules B – K and Missions 1 – 4. Are Optional but work towards the YL Award

6 What Does Module A Cover ?
Purpose & Method of the Scout Association Child Protection ( Safeguarding ) Policy, Organization & Rules ( POR ) Activity Rules & Safety ( Risk Assessment ) Understanding the Role of the Young Leader This a 2 hour session designed to ensure your safety as well as the other young people.

7 The Other Modules ? Prepare for Take Off :- Compulsory, delivered within 3 Months of becoming a YL. This is about safeguarding for young people and being safe yourself. Taking the Lead :- Learn how/when to apply different leadership styles. That’s the way to do It :- How to teach new skills to young people. Kids behaving badly :- How to handle challenging behaviour in young people. Game on :- How to deliver a variety of games in a variety of ways. Making Scouting accessible :- Ensuring that all those who want to Scout can. Programme Plans :- How to deliver a balanced Scouting program and awards and badges Programme Plans PLUS :- Delivering a balanced Scouting program part II. What Did they Say :- Effective communication and listening. First Aid :- Does this need explaining ? The modules are run on a rolling programme, once a month except for the summer.

8 3 Meetings / Sectional Forums 4 Responsibility & Record Keeping
What Are The 4 Missions ? 1 Indoor Activities 2 Outdoor Activities 3 Meetings / Sectional Forums 4 Responsibility & Record Keeping The missions are designed to allow you to put the Module training into practice.

9 Rewards and Recognition ?
Awarded YL Badge on Completion of Module A Awarded a certificate of attendance for each module training session. Awarded a Mission Strip on Completion of Each Mission. Total of 4 Presented with Young Leader Belt Buckle & Certificate on Completion of Whole Scheme. Counts towards DOE volunteer section. Looks impressive on your CV and sets you apart from others Some Groups will ( should ) pay your yearly Scout Capitation Fee.

11 What Does Your Section Leader(s) Need To Do for YOU?
Remember that You are a Young Person Do not allow You Unsupervised Access Give You Responsibility and Support You ! Include You in the program planning and delivery Be Prepared to Step In You should have a partnership agreement with the Scout Group YOU are not there to make up the numbers or just do the washing up !
