The persistence of dissent
When Nixon became president in early 1969, he recognized that the Vietnam question had for several years, had been a major source of social unrest. The new president had to determine the best way of uniting a society that was being increasingly divided into pro- and antiwar fractions As we have seen, since the mid- 1960s, students and americans critical of U.S. Foreign policy and expressed their dissent by engaging in sit-ins, marches, and mass demonstrations.

January 1964- Lyndon Johnson, in his state of the union address, announces a "war on poverty" August 20, 1964 – president Johnson signs the Economic Opportunity act , a key component of his Great Society program March 8, 1965- the first official U.S. Combat troops enter the Vietnam war. June 18, 1965- american 8 52 planes begin bombing in South Vietnam, sinking communist targets
