1 Surveys and Questionnaires
LG: I can describe the characteristics of an effective survey or questionnaire.

2 Brainstorm as a class What is a survey? Why are surveys used?
Are all surveys good? What makes a ‘good’ survey?

3 What makes a good question?
Questions should be unbiased They should not unnecessarily restrict people’s choices (open vs. closed questions) They should not include language that may influence responses (such as opinions of the surveyor)

4 A Survey of Surveys In groups we will be evaluating different surveys.
One member of each group needs to have open: A survey of Surveys and fill it in as you discuss the surveys.

5 Survey Techniques Surveys may be conducted:
anonymously in writing, by phone, or in person by an interviewer People may be less likely to answer honestly by phone or in person, depending on the subject matter

6 Sampling Sample Size: Aim for 10% of population
Too small may not be reliable Too large may be costly and difficult to manage Sampling Techniques: Must be representative of the population Random : Simple, stratified, cluster, systematic Non-random: Convenience, judgment, voluntary, snowball Sample that are not representative are biased, include handout for students on sampling techniques. A survey that includes the entire population is called a census study.
