Advanced Medical Terminology The Male Genitourinary System

2 Glands that secrete testosterone and make spermatoza
The male genitourinary system contains both the structures of reproduction and part of the urinary system Seminal vesicle Ductus (vas) deferens Ejaculatory duct Prostate Urethra Bulbourethral gland The male genitourinary system contains both the structures of reproduction and part of the urinary system. The testes are the glands that secrete testosterone and make spermatozoa (sper-mat-uh-ZOH-uh). The epididymis (epi-DID-ih-mis), epi- meaning above and didymis- meaning testes, is the tube above the testes. Both are located in the scrotum. Other sperm-carrying tubes include the vas deferens (vas DEF-ehr-enz) which is the tube cut during vasectomy, the urethra, and the ejaculatory duct. The accessory glands that add fluid to the sperm to make semen include the seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands. The rest of the system is the delivery structure called the penis which carries the semen through the urethra and into the female. Learning to use the root words, suffixes and prefixes properly can help you code the diagnoses and procedures that are used in male reproductive medicine practices and facilities. Building the medical terminology to describe the signs and symptoms of diseases of the GU system depends upon which area of the system if affected. Orch/o (OR-ko) refers to the testes. Spermia refers to a condition of the sperm. Prostatitis (pros-tuh-TY-tis) is an inflammation of the prostate gland. There are also some commonly used abbreviations you should know. BPH is benign prostatic (prah-STA-tic) hypertrophy or non-cancerous overgrowth of the prostate gland. ED stands for erectile dysfunction and STD means sexually transmitted disease.
