2 SI Elements: Courses – historically difficult courses SI Leader – passed course with an A – paid for attending all classes with current class – does not re-lecture – leads/facilitates discussion – shares study strategies – viewed as a peer Sessions – two one hour sessions per wk – planned around students Session – group participation Participant – attended at least one SI session – attendance is voluntary Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9

3 Data Source Janice Levasseur – MSJC MVC Math Coordinator 867 students – enrolled 410 SI Group (47% participation rate) 357 Non-SI Group 5 Semesters - 20 courses sessions FA06 - Math:140 SP07 - Math: 90, 105, 140 FA07 - Math: 50, 51, 105, 140 SP08 – Math: 50, 51, 90, 96, 105 FA07 - Math: 50, 51, 90, 96, 105, Psyc 101, Hist 124 M50 /51= Pre-Algebra M90 = Elementary Algebra M96 Intermediate Algebra M105 = College Algebra M140 = Statistics Psyc 101 = Intro Hist 124 = U.S. Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9

5 Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9 46% participation Approximately half (47%) of the all students attended at least one SI session. 563-one hour sessions were conducted generating over 2,500 contact hours Approximately half (47%) of the all students attended at least one SI session. 563-one hour sessions were conducted generating over 2,500 contact hours

6 Grade Distribution SI versus Non-SI group FA06/SP07/FA07/SP08/FA08 Successful completions in the SI Group (69%) far exceed the Non-SI (40%). The % of Ws were significantly higher among Non-SI Group (33%) relative to the SI Group (13%), Ws and Fs account for over ½ of non-SI grades. 7 7 SI -Stats FA06/SP07/FA07/SP08/FA08 Participants attended on average 6+sessions The mean # of students per session were 4+ A SI session requires an estimated 3 attendees to be cost effective Participants attended on average 6+sessions The mean # of students per session were 4+ A SI session requires an estimated 3 attendees to be cost effective Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9

8 Grade Point Average SI versus Non-SI group FA06/SP07/FA07/SP08/FA08 The mean final grade avg. of SI participants 2.5 was 0.6 (over 1/2 grade point) higher than the Non–SI participants. Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9

9 Students that attended more SI sessions received higher grades Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9 # of SI Sessions Attended Mean Final Grade Avg. Received SP08

Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9 Key Findings & Next Steps: Math 96 – 2nd semester of supporting with SI with up side down results (2 different instructors) Next step: determined the cause before further M96 SI support is given on MVC Hypothesis – i.e. possibility due to under-prepared M90 entering M96 - test prep = 1 to 4 sessions attendees Summer session SI – 4 sections SU08 with little or no success- summer students tend to be stronger academically Next step: MVC will not run SI in future summer sessions Increases success rate Selection of courses are data based driven BSI funded - 3 classes (math 50,51,96) as a result SI courses will be offered in: history (FA08,SP09) psychology (FA08,SP09) Spanish (SP09) SI growth sources: funding (not a replacement for tutoring) availability of SI leaders (trained & experienced) seasoned SI coordinator (trained, experienced & dedicated champion)
