1
Annotating “Reading with a pencil” is the practice of making notes to oneself during reading.
2
What does it help you do exactly?
Focus attention on text (not just glaze over the words) Find text based evidence. Keep track of your thinking.
3
Why? Used to help guide discussions. Used to help develop writing.
It improves comprehension tremendously.
4
How do we do it? Have a conversation with the text. Talk back to it.
Ask questions!!! Comment on the actions or the development of the character(s). Comment on lines/quotations you think are especially significant, powerful, or meaningful.
5
How do we do it? Express agreement or disagreement.
Summarize key events. Make predictions. Connect ideas to each other or to other texts. Note if you experience an epiphany. Note anything you would like to discuss or do not understand.
6
Example of Annotation ideas
in Grades 6-8 Underline the major points. Circle keywords or phrases that are confusing or unknown to you. Use a question mark (?) for questions that you have during the reading. Be sure to write your question. Use an exclamation mark (!) for things that surprise you, and briefly note what it was that caught your attention. Draw an arrow (↵) when you make a connection to something inside the text, or to an idea or experience outside the text. Briefly note your connections.
