Syntax Defined Syntax refers to the way words are arranged in a sentence. From the Greek, "arrange together"

Syntax exhibited “Named must your fear be before banish it you can.”

Tension Defined Tension, in a work of literature, is a feeling of excitement and expectation the reader or audience feels because of the conflict, mood, or atmosphere of the work.

Tension Exhibited In Remember the Titans, the two coaches had conflict that was suspenseful at times.

Texture Defined Texture describes the way the elements of a work of prose or poetry are joined together.

Texture Exhibited Texture joins words like the Mackinac Bridge joins upper and lower Michigan.

Theme Defined The theme of a work is usually considered the central idea. There can be several themes in a single work.

Theme Exhibited For a few years now, Adrian College’s admissions office has used the theme of “paths” on their web-site:

Tone Defined Tone, which can also be called attitude, is the way the author presents a subject. Remember, it is not necessarily what you say, it is how you say it.

Tone Exhibited When the famous football coach Vince Lombardi yells: “What the heck is going on out there?!” to his players, you can sense the disappointed tone.

Voice Defined How the speaker of a literary work presents himself or herself to the reader determines that speaker's unique voice.

Quiz Essay: Please write an essay for the next 40 minutes that utilizes each of the terms that were presented today.

I’m kidding If you were to write that essay, what kind of tone might you use to show your displeasure at the assignment? Would your voice come through? How about syntax? What themes might emerge? Did you feel the tension in the room when the last slide was shown? Was there a noticeable texture?
