Scientific Method
2
What is Chemistry? A science that deals with:
the composition, structure, and properties of substances, the transformations they undergo the energies of those transformations
3
5 Fields of Chemistry Organic: study of substances with Carbon
Inorganic: study of all other substances Analytical: study of what is in the sample and how much. Physical: study of the structures of substance. Biochemistry: study chemical reactions in living systems.
4
Where is Chemistry? Chemistry is EVERYWHERE!
A.) Soaps, Cleansers, Plastics B.) Ammonia and Nylon; two chemicals which have changed the way we live.
5
How is Chemistry done? Scientific Method: Chemistry is an experimental science. A.)Observation and intuition leads to an initial insight. Observation can lead to a question. Einstein called it the intuitive leap. Beyond what can be established with current understanding. A hypothesis is formed from this. B.) Hypothesis: A tentative explanation that can be validated by experiment. C.) Experiment: An operation or procedure carried out under controlled conditions to test a hypothesis. Manipulated variable is the variable that can be changed. Responding variable is the variable that is observed, it is the dependant factor.
6
Scientific Method D.) Theory: Well tested explanation for a broad set of observations. E.) Scientific Law: Concise statement that summarizes many observations and experiments.
7
Let’s Practice… Give an example for each step in the scientific method : Observation – Hypothesis – Experiment – Theory – Scientific Law –
