2 “The Lord Turned And Looked”
Luke 22:60-62

3 Luke 22:60-62 “But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So Peter went out and wept bitterly.”

4 Luke 22:60-62 “But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So Peter went out and wept bitterly.”

5 “The Lord Turned And Looked”
What did He see? Fulfilled Prophecy

6 Fulfilled Prophecy “Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee” (Matthew 26:31,32).

7 Fulfilled Prophecy 1) Quoted from Zechariah 13:7.
“Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, Against the Man who is My Companion,” Says the Lord of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.”

8 Fulfilled Prophecy 2) Three things we learn from this:
(a) The Lord’s knowledge & application of the Scripture. “Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers” (Luke 2:46,47).

9 Fulfilled Prophecy 2) Three things we learn from this:
(b) Omniscience of the Lord. “Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet” (John 4:16-19).

10 Fulfilled Prophecy 2) Three things we learn from this:
(c) Truthfulness of His word. “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled” (Matthew 5:17,18).

11 “The Lord Turned And Looked”
What did He see? Fulfilled Prophecy Overconfident Man

12 Overconfident Man “Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.” Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said all the disciples” (Matthew 26:33- 35).

13 Overconfident Man 1) Israel as an example.
“Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come” (1 Corinthians 10:6-11).

14 Overconfident Man 2) God’s promise.
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

15 Overconfident Man 3) Notice between the verses we just read!
“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). One must not measure himself apart from the trials he must deal with. Words will not suffice; faithfulness, while trusting the Lord, in the face of adversity is the true test of one’s character.

16 “The Lord Turned And Looked”
What did He see? Fulfilled Prophecy Overconfident Man A Fallen Man

17 A Fallen Man “Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.” But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.” And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.” But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!” And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.” Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crowed” (Matthew 26:69-74).

18 A Fallen Man 1) A man following from a distance.
“Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed at a distance” (Luke 22:54).

19 A Fallen Man 2) A man can be overtaken.
“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted” (Galatians 6:1). Overtaken – “of being overtaken in any trespass, Gal. 6:1, where the meaning is not that of detecting a person in the act, but of his being caught by the trespass, through his being off his guard. The modern Greek Version is ‘even if a man, through lack of circumspection, should fall into any sin.’” (Vine, p. 835).

20 A Fallen Man 3) Warnings. “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered…” (John 15:6). “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27). “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12).

21 “The Lord Turned And Looked”
What did He see? Fulfilled Prophecy Overconfident Man A Fallen Man A Repentant Man

22 A Repentant Man “And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly” (Matthew 26:75).

23 A Repentant Man 1) Two things that lead to repentance.
“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4). “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death” (2 Corinthians 7:10).

24 “The Lord Turned And Looked”
What did He see? Fulfilled Prophecy Overconfident Man A Fallen Man A Repentant Man A Useful Man

25 A Useful Man “And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren” (Luke 22:31,32).

26 A Useful Man 1) Became a pillar in the Lord’s church.
“But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been committed to me, as the gospel for the circumcised was to Peter (for He who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship to the circumcised also worked effectively in me toward the Gentiles), and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised” (Galatians 2:7-9).
