WHAT IS AN ANALOGY? Webster.com defines an analogy as a “correspondence between the members of pairs or sets of linguistic forms that serves as a basis for the creation of another form.” In a vocabulary analogy question, there will be a beginning set of words setting up a distinct relationship (the words will usually be either synonymous, possess opposing meanings as antonyms, or form a particular correspondence such as cause and effect) Your job will be to mirror the relationship between these first two terms between a third provided term and a fourth term that you select.

EXAMPLE VOCABULARY ANALOGY
Light : Dark :: Dry : ____________. Which of the following vocabulary terms correctly completes the analogy? A) Scruples B) Affable C) Rowels D) Dank The correct answer is “D” because “dank” describes something unpleasantly moist, the opposite of dry. This antonym relationship between “dry” and “dank” mirrors the opposing meanings of “light” and “dark”.
