Search & Destroy ( ) 1964: General Westmoreland takes command in Vietnam. Not impressed by S. Vietnamese Army (ARVN) asks for more US troops LBJ, Secy of State Rusk, and Secy of Defense McNamara agree, 180K US combat troops land in Da Nang, SV in March 1965 Westmoreland’s strategy for victory in Vietnam includes: Start of war of attrition (constant attacks to reduce number of VC), high body counts will demoralize enemy Launch “search & destroy” missions to root out and kill VC Win the “hearts & minds” of Vietnamese villagers
