Characterization The process by which the writer reveals the personality of the characters

2 Main Types of Characterization
Indirect Characterization (implicit or inferred) shows things that reveal the personality of a character

Characterization The author may reveal a character in several ways:
His/her physical appearance What he/she says, thinks, feels, and dreams what he/she does or does not do What others say about him/her and how others react to him/her

Characterization Direct Characterization (Explicit or stated) tells the audience what the personality of the character is Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.”

Characterization Protagonist: the main character- the focus of the reader’s attention Antagonist- a person or force in opposition with the protagonist
