1 12 Observations From 1Corinthians 3 Concerning Building On The Foundation

2 Having brought before us the Cross as setting aside the flesh in judgment, and the Holy Spirit as setting aside the wisdom of this world, the apostle now returns to the theme with which he commenced the Epistle, the state of division that existed in the assembly at Corinth. Later he will deal with other manifestations of the flesh, but, apparently, he deals first with this particular evil, for, as so often since that day, a divided state in the assembly renders it difficult, if not impossible, to correct other abuses. (Hamilton Smith)

3 Note: This implies there is a standard by which
vs.1-4 A church can be “carnal” and so can it’s approach to the Lord’s things Note: This implies there is a standard by which we can measure vs.4,5 A local assembly can gather around a man or human leader. vs.5-7 Preachers, etc. are not ultimately who is significant – God’s glory is! 4. v.9 There is work and service to do.

4 5. v.10 There is a pattern to follow. v.10 There are things we are to heed – warnings! 7.v.10 It matters not only what we build but how we build. 8. v12 The Lord’s estimation sets the standard – not results.

5 9. v.17 God’s principles are vital
(1) His testimony for to be accurately presented and maintained (2) for His church to properly function and prosper v.19 Human worldly wisdom even when well intentioned won’t cut it.

6 v.21 Assembly should not reflect man’s glory or produce boasting in men v.13 “The day” – not this day– will declare and reveal it!
