World War I Breaks Out What were some factors that contributed to world conflict? 1. Imperialism: the quest for colonial empires. The quest for new territory and resources. 2. Nationalism: pride or loyalty in your country.

What incident sparked World War I?
The newly independent Serbia saw Bosnia as part of its rightful territory. However, Austria-Hungary viewed Serbia’s growing strength as a threat to its control of its territories. In June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated by a Serbian student, Gavrilo Princip.

What is the significance of the First Battle of the Marne?
Sept. 5, 1914, the Allies were able to defend Paris, capital of France from a German offensive and pushed them back 40 miles back towards Germany. Both sides realize that there will be no quick victory.

What is trench warfare? How did it help to produce a stalemate?
Military strategy of defending a position by fighting from the protection of deep ditches. A stalemate is when no one gets an advantage over the other. Trenches produced better protection for the soldiers therefore, soldiers were less inclined to charge the enemy to gain more territory.

Describe what it was like fighting in the trenches?
1. Massive artillery barrage and then soldiers went “over the top” into “no man’s Land” and then get cut down by machine guns fire. 2. Trenches had rats and lice, dead bodies, flooded with mud, and unsanitary conditions bred disease and sickness, killing nearly the same amount as the fighting.
