What will be assessed in the November mocks?
English Language: Paper 1 – Explorations in creative reading and writing English Literature: Romeo and Juliet and An Inspector Calls enjoylearnsucceed
5
What are the common mistakes seen in these topics?
For the language exam, the issue students face is the final question, question 5, where there is an expectation for students to write an extended piece of text. For the literature exam, students must refer to the whole text and be confident discussing the plot and the characters. In particular, in Romeo and Juliet, students must comment on the extract provided and then move on to talk about the rest of the play. enjoylearnsucceed

Key tips to success in the mock examination
For the language exam: Keep completing practice papers. Exposure to a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, will prepare students for unseen texts which they will have to analyse. Completing writing tasks in the time frame expected in the exam (45 mins), handwritten, not typed, will also serve as practice for students. For the literature exam: Students need to know the text thoroughly. Have an understanding of key characters, themes, plot and what happens when (structure). Re-reading the text is the most beneficial way to go into the exam confidently, particularly those we studied in Year 10: An Inspector Calls and A Christmas Carol. enjoylearnsucceed

Resources for success Student Reception sells revision guides for all topics studied in English – English Language A Christmas Carol An Inspector Calls Romeo and Juliet Poetry: Power and Conflict Poetry: Unseen Each revision guide is £2.75 and can be purchased in a morning, at break, at lunch and after school. The following websites are particularly beneficial for students: English language - English literature - Mr Bruff – English literature revision - enjoylearnsucceed

What can parents / carers do to help?
Revise a key scene or chapter, character, theme, or poem in 15 minute chunks. Ask them the quick questions in their revision guides. When completing a full practice answer, recreate the exam environment at home: students should not access mobile phones, should sit for 45 minutes, and should handwrite their responses. enjoylearnsucceed

Physics Energy Electricity Particle model of matter Atomic structure enjoylearnsucceed
22
What are the common mistakes seen in these topics?
Not learning the key words or equations. Avoiding revising the topics that are the most difficult. Rushing and not taking time to read the questions carefully from the beginning. Leaving answers blank. Seeing a new scenario and panicking. enjoylearnsucceed
23
Key tips to success in the mock examination
Use your revision guide and the Know It Knowledge sheets to identify topics that you find the most difficult and start going over these first. Identify all the key scientific terms and equations that you will need to remember for each topic. Make flash cards and use them regularly to test yourself. After you have revised each topic area answer the questions on the worksheets in your revision packs. Check Class Charts and complete the Home Learning Tasks set by teachers. Remember to purple pen the incorrect answers in lesson so you can see where you went wrong. enjoylearnsucceed

What can parents / carers do to help?
Help your child to set aside time each week to revise science without any distractions (TV, smart phone, social media). Short sessions (20-30 minutes) that happen regularly and often can have the best results. Discuss the work your child is doing with them. Are they dedicating time to the areas they need to improve or doing the topics they find easiest? Encourage your child to attend period 6 sessions whenever possible. Use Class Charts to get access to revision resources and home learning set by their science teachers. Home Learning is focused on past topics and revision skills and will help students improve their science grades in the mock and summer examinations. enjoylearnsucceed
