22/02/2019 Since the 18th century London has gained different degrees on autonomy Between 1889 and 1963 London was ruled by the elected London City Council but this was replaced by Greater London Council with less powers. Background

22/02/2019 But after a Labour manifesto promise in the 1997 election to have a referendum on whether London should have directly elected council with a very high degree on autonomy. The referendum was held on the 7th May 1998 so it would coincide with the local elections. Background

22/02/2019 Al parties were in favour of the London mayor and both put forward candidates before the referendum for the mayor. The conservatives ran on the slogan “Vote Yes and then vote for the Conservatives” Labour were the most vocal in the campaign actively campaigning for the yes vote The campaign

22/02/2019 The results were overwhelmingly in favour of the change, with a 72% to 28% majority However, with a turnout of just 34.1% the legitimacy of the referendum can be challenged, as it may not have been an accurate representation of the public’s views Results
