density compared to other substance (sink or float in water?)
NOV 5 / Act B18 Properties of Plastic LEARNING TARGET: I can use collected evidence from chemical / physical property tests to identify an unknown plastic sample. CH Q How do the physical and chemical properties of plastics affect their uses? VOCAB: physical / chemical properties; relative density density compared to other substance (sink or float in water?) Look at previous notes

DISCUSSION What makes plastic a useful material? 2. Remembering Act 12, if you were going to manufacture a product such as a drink container, why might you make it out of plastic? strong, light, cheap, easy to shape/color, won't break 3. List Physical properties of plastics? flexible, strong, heat resistant, relative density to water or other liquids (color not a PP as humans can change it)

Four Common Plastics Color Key
5
PROCEDURE AND DATA MATERIALS: PROCEDURE: Read on pg. B and summarize DATA: WS Properties of Different Plastics
6
DO NOT LEAVE OPEN VIALS SITTING ON TABLE (they get knocked over)
FYI - to get small plastic out of vial, turn upside down and let square lay flat on inside of cap – then CAREFULLY tip vial back until liquid is in bottom and take cap off with square stuck to it neat trick!!
7
Plastics REACTION WITH ACETONE
8
RED – NO reaction with acetone
9
YELLOW – slightly bent, turning acetone yellow
10
BLUE – NO reaction with acetone
11
GREEN – bent, turning acetone green
12
Plastics EFFECT WITH HEAT

POST DISSCUSSION Which of the four types of plastic you tested do you think is used most today and why? PP (strong container) or HDPE (food - does not react) The next few slides we can choose to make into table copies for the students to use for discussion and return to us.
