How do you convince young men when they might die or get severely wounded? Appeal to: Nationalism, Patriotism, Militarism Duty Honor God Fear for loved ones Need for revenge

Television had not yet been invented Not everyone owned or had access to a radio Posters were the most effective means of getting a message across

Propaganda It is important to remember propaganda was designed to create mass opinion and mass action NOT to encourage individual thinking or responsibility. Many techniques were used to control public opinion

Propaganda Techniques
1. The tear-jerker- emotional appeal to the masses 2. Stereotyping- giving characteristics to a whole group 3.Identification- use of symbols to identify with personal feelings. E.g the Canadian Flag 4. Band Wagon- Everyone else is doing it. You should too 5. Testimonials- Using well known people 6. Plain Folks- Using everyday people 7. Name Calling- “ 8. Vague phrases and generalities- “Your country needs you”
