1 Parliament Disrupted Staying Sane in a Crazy World

2 1867 2016 New Zealand Parliament 1867 - 2016
1867 Parliament started its own reporting service so that members of Parliament and the public knew what had happened during sessions. The reporting service was called ‘Hansard’. It provided neutral reports on what had happened. Before Hansard, members of Parliament had to read newspaper reports on debates to get a record of them. The newspapers were very political and often owned by politicians themselves. They gave biased reports on Parliament when the issues were controversial. March The Labour Government wanted to talk directly to the people. Radio allowed them to do this. When Parliament opened on 25 March 1936, the proceedings were broadcast around the country. New Zealand became the first country in the world to regularly broadcast Parliament on the radio. Early 2000’s – , process automation 2004 Precinct websites combined into Parliament website. Publication automated. 2007 Parliament TV was first shown on the Parliament website. Later in 2007 it started on Freeview, Sky and TelstraClear. This service took a long time to set up. Some aspects of Parliament had been shown on TV since 1990, but TV companies were not interested in showing all the proceedings for free. So Parliament set up its own TV service. 2009 eCommittee system goes live 2015 Virtual House app released. 2016 Website revamped. Speaking notes: We are on a journey. It started with the culture survey back in 2013 that told us staff wanted to make the connection between what they do and our overall purpose and direction. Since then we have articulated our purpose and vision, undergone a PIF and developed our Strategic Intentions for the next four years. Our Strategic Direction was directly influenced by the findings from the PIF…but also by our earlier self-review and initiatives already progressing. Place excellence and innovation at the heart of what we do. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT FRAMEWORK REVIEW 2
