The Why: ODE’s focus to update all standards
2/22/2019 The Why: ODE’s focus to update all standards Last physical education standards adopted in 2001 Instructional materials in classrooms by fall 2018 National Physical Education Standards in 2013 Create grade-level outcomes Overdue to update standards. Last adopted in 2001 ODE Focus to update all standards. Previously had Benchmarks and with the advent of new National Physical Education Standards in 2013 came Grade level Outcomes. Prepare students to be citizens with life-long fitness/activity habits Help students manage health issues (mental and medical) The State Board of Education shall regularly and periodically review and revise…rigorous academic content standards in mathematics, science, English history, geography, economics, civics, physical education, health, the arts and world languages. The review and revision shall involve teachers, other educators and citizens and shall provide for ample opportunity for public comment. School districts…shall offer students instruction…that that meets the academic content standards adopted by the State Board of Education… (ORS ) “Academic content standards” means expectations of student knowledge and skills adopted by the State Board of Education under ORS

The How Revised draft standards grade-level outcomes
Reviewed stakeholders’ feedback Received 215 responses Revised draft standards grade-level outcomes Based on feedback and content panel input Content Panel recommendations presented The draft was reviewed by stakeholders for feedback. Received 215 responses for K-12. Feedback was reviewed and drafts were adjusted according to feedback and content panel input.

Current Status Responses reviewed, no changes made
After State Board first read (May 2016) the standards and grade level outcomes were sent out for review by stakeholders Received 212 responses Responses reviewed, no changes made Majority of responses were “appropriate rigor” The draft was reviewed by stakeholders for feedback after the last SBE meeting. We received 222 responses. Feedback was reviewed by ODE staff. It was determined to make no changes to the outcomes. The vast majority of responses were showing “appropriate rigor”.

Next Steps With SBE approval of standards and outcomes
Instructional materials Adoption Review Criteria committee selected Criteria will be developed and recommended to the board Advisory Panel support of implementation of the standards Currently, we are requesting applications for the Instructional Materials Adoption Review Criteria Committee. A committee will be selected. They will meet to determine a recommendation to bring to you in October for the Criteria by which to select Instructional materials. The members of the content panel will become and advisory panel and continue for three years to support the implementation of the standards.
