How are the children doing?
Child Outcomes in Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten
2
We looked at… Data from six Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten (OHS PreK) programs that use the Galileo Assessment Scales to assess the developmental progress of children These six programs represent rural and urban areas from counties across the state: Multnomah (Albina Head Start), Clackamas (Clackamas ESD), Lane (Head Start of Lane County), Harney (Harney ESD), Lincoln (Community Services Consortium) and Douglas (Umpqua Community Action Network).
3
We compared… How children were doing in the fall when they entered Head Start to how children were doing in the spring, when they finished Head Start Data collected in Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 Entered into the data base by teachers All children who were in program in fall and in the spring (total of 1100 children) ODE has access to the Oregon Galileo data at the state level
4
What did we find? Children made better than expected gains from the fall to the spring in all eight areas that Galileo measured.
5
For example…
6
Language and Literacy Expected gain: 50 points. OHS PreK gain:
Explain the average score for all children. Explain the line – 50 point expected gain just for OHSPK. The 50 point gain expectation is for ALL children participating in a program. The 50 point gain on the Galileo is equivalent of a change of one standard deviation in development. One-standard deviation of change is what is typically the expected change in development associated with participating in a program over one school year. Includes capabilities in listening and understanding spoken language, speaking and communicating, phonological awareness, book knowledge and appreciation, print awareness and concepts, early reading and writing, and alphabet knowledge.
7
Early Math Expected gain: 50 points. OHS PreK gain: 65 points.
Things like shapes, sorting, time concepts. Includes a variety of number and operations areas, including counting, addition, subtraction, fractions and math communications. Also assessed are geometry and spatial sense, which include sorting, seriation, concepts and shapes. Patterns, measurement, time concepts and graphing
8
Social and Emotional Development
Expected gain: 50 points. OHS PreK gain: 63 points. Includes knowledge of self, knowledge of family and community, understanding diversity, cooperation, resolving conflicts, self-control, independence in daily activities, and initiating and maintaining social relationships.
