1
Health Disparities Among Rural Populations
Allison Wood
2
Statement of the Problem
Health disparities among rural populations are prevalent and a present reality for many: 20% of Americans residing in rural areas; being served by 9% of providers (ahrq.gov, 2005). Rural residents experience: overall fair to poor health status higher rates of diabetes and obesity (Miles, Et., al., 2011)
3
Statement of the Problem
Rural residents are more likely to: Have a lack of healthcare coverage Defer coverage/ care due to associated cost Be in less compliance with preventative care and necessary screenings (Bennett, Et., al., 2008).
4
Purpose As acknowledged by the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Service; “Rural populations disproportionately suffer from chronic disease relative to the general public. Access to quality health care in rural areas is restricted by poor infrastructure and a smaller health care workforce, hindering the utilization of preventative health services and compromising the implementation of wellness and healthy lifestyle programs” (dhhs.gov, 2011) (Bennett, Et., al., 2011). This is the problem my given research will present and further investigate.
5
Significance This research will have significance toward the health disparities that are faced by rural populations and what can and is occurring to address such disparities. Through the completed research I intend to: How the barriers to health are approached by professionals, providers and everyday people. What can be done to be most effective in avoiding higher instances of disease and death among this population. This research will most especially impact those who are minorities, migrants or potentially marginalized in various ways in reference to their equality in health (Ramirez, Villarejo, 2012).
6
Research Questions and/or Hypothesis
Research questions to be included are the following: 1) How do the attitudes and perceptions of health; and how it is presented and communicated, impact the healthcare services sought out by rural populations? 2) What disparities are most prevalent for rural residents and what can contribute to remedying this issue (s)? (Boland, Et., al., 2014) 3) How does the accessibility and understanding of health influence rural residents in receiving needed care? 4)What are the effects on rural living on health in terms of disparities being present?
7
Research Methodology My focus for data will remain on qualitative research. Research will be conducted through surveys and questionairres in the general public with focus on rural and urban populations to best compare and contrast. I will hold in person discussions and potential phone conferences with professionals and providers in given areas to determine those conditions that occur at above normal levels to put patients/ clients at greatest risk.
