Section 1: Imperialism and America • Queen Lililuokalani last reigning monarch of Hawaii; reigned from 1891 to 1893. • *Imperialism-the policy in which stronger nations extend their economic, political, or military control over weaker territories. • In the early 1800s, Europe targeted the continent of Africa as their new territorial claims.

The country of China was also being targeted for expansion by the Japanese.
• Pearl Harbor- is built as a refueling station and port for U.S. ships in Hawaii in 1887. • Samford B. Dole- head of the newly formed government after the decline of Queen Liluokalani. o In 1898, Congress claimed Hawaii an American Territory although Hawaiians never had the chance to vote. o 1959-Hawaii becomes the 50th state of the U.S.

Section 2: The Spanish-American War
• At the end of the 19th century, Spain had control of Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. • American interest in Spain grows: o In 1854, the U.S. offers to buy Cuba from Spain Spain refuses. o Cubans revolt against Spain Cubans not successful • Yellow Journalism- the sensational style of writing that exaggerates the news to lure and enrage readers towards a certain topic or cause.

• Major incidents that led to the outbreak of war:
o The De Lôme Letter o The U.S.S. Maine explodes in the harbor in Havana. • George Dewey- Commodore of the U.S. Navy, gives the command for the first U.S. Attack on Spain in the Philippine Islands in April 1898. • Military Expansion: o U.S. Navy-powerful and successful o U.S. Army-needed to expand- more troops, supplies, arms, etc. o Rough Riders- a volunteer cavalry under the command of Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt that fought for the U.S. in Cuba.

• Battle of San Juan Hill:
The Rough Riders along with two African-American regiments played a large role in the preparations for the battle. After the victory at San Juan Hill; the Spanish try to escape the U.S Naval Blockade which ultimately leads to the destruction of the Spanish naval fleet.

The Treaty of Paris: Cease fire signed in August entire war lasted 15 weeks Treaty was signed on December 10, 1898. Spain freed Cuba. Spain surrendered Guam, and Puerto Rico to the United States. Spain sold the Philippines to the United States for $20 million. On February 6, 1899, Congress approves the annexation of the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
