Sanctity of Life: life is sacred because it is God given Using thumbs up/side/down – indicate whether you agree (thumb up), not sure (to the side) or don’t agree (thumb down) with the following situations for having the right to be a parent... If one or both people in the couple are infertile IVF goes against God giving life Can’t have children naturally due to medical reasons Loneliness Criminal record for violence Homosexual (same sex couple)

6 What is IVF? 1.Egg cells are taken from the mother.
IVF: a scientific method of making a woman pregnant which does NOT involve sex. Conception occurs via sperm and egg being placed into a test tube 1.Egg cells are taken from the mother. 4. The embryo is implanted back into the mother. Hormone treatment will make her womb ready to be pregnant. Talk through...field any questions. 3.The fertilised eggs are incubated (= kept warm) to let them grow for a few days. 2.The egg is mixed with a sperm sample to allow fertilisation.

7 Types of IVF Artificial Insemination by Donor (AID)
This involves a mother having her eggs fertilised by a donor, either because her husband is infertile or it’s a same sex couple. DO NOT confuse this with AIDS. Artificial Insemination by Husband (AIH) The mother’s eggs are fertilised using her husband’s sperm. This is necessary if e.g. the woman has blocked fallopian tubes or the husband has a low sperm count making natural conception very difficult. Read through quickly

Using pg 12-13 Answer activity 2 – Do you agree with surrogacy? Give reasons for your opinion Read pg 14-15 Create two spider diagrams to show the arguments for and against artificial insemination Surrogacy: a woman’s egg is fertilised artificially by another woman’s partner Extension – Reflect on how you think someone would feel if they found out their genetic father was a sperm donor. Do you think they would mind? Would they want to find out who the donor was? Would they want to meet him?
