Shekinah Successfully delivered employability programmes since 2003
On average in both Plymouth and Torbay, we are placing people per year back into employment 78% of people we work with are currently with in the criminal justice system. We have developed an EWG (employers working group) consisting of 15 local employers who support our programme.

Why does it work? We don't work with offenders/ex-offenders, we work with people We deliver an range of bespoke, individually tailored training packages. Training consists of real “generic employability skills” embedded within a range of activities. Clear links to employment opportunities. Constant conversations with local employers to understand their needs. Longer term ongoing support once an individual secures employment.

Challenges Lack of aspiration from both clients and support staff.
Employment often seen as something someone has to work towards, once they have addressed all their issues! Appropriate pre-employment training. Educate employers, if you can’t, they are not worth working with. And of course, funding!!!

Top Tips Understand your local employment market and employers needs.
Never be afraid to challenge, inappropriate employment will be disastrous for all concerned. Structured work placements are vital. Avoid the life long volunteer syndrome. Ensure ongoing support for both employer and employee.
