Figure 3 Acute endurance exercise promotes dynamic secretion of exosomes from skeletal muscle Figure 3 | Acute endurance exercise promotes dynamic secretion of exosomes from skeletal muscle. C57BL/6 mice (male; 3 months old; n = 6 per group) were divided into sedentary (SED) and acute exercise groups, with the latter subjected to acute endurance exercise (acute END; 15 m/min for 90 min on a motorized treadmill). Animals were immediately sacrificed after exercise and soleus muscle was fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde. Representative immunofluorescence images of ALIX (exosomal marker protein; red) and DAPI (nuclei; blue) in soleus from sedentary and acute exercised mice are shown. An appreciable and stark decrease in ALIX staining after exercise is seen, signifying the release of exosomes from muscle. A similar effect was observed in all mice used in the study (A. Safdar, A. Saleem and M. A. Tarnopolsky, unpublished work). Safdar, A. et. al. (2016) The potential of endurance exercise-derived exosomes to treat metabolic diseases Nat. Rev. Endocrinol. doi: /nrendo
