Did Jesus Die in My Place?

2. Matthew 27:46
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Many have concluded from this that the Father had, indeed, forsaken the Son. But is this a necessary inference?

3. John 8:28-29
Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him."

4. John 12:27-28
"Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again."

5. John 16:32
Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
If the Father left the Son alone at any time – even in His Son’s death, it seems to me the Son did not know the Father as well as He thought He did!

6. Had God Forsaken His Son at this particular moment in time?
If He had, would Jesus not know why He had?
Jesus knew from eternity past that this moment would come.
How could He have been surprised at His Father’s actions at any time?
How could He have been unsure of His Father’s motives at any time?

7. Had God Forsaken His Son at this particular moment in time?
He knew about Psalm 22 long before He came to earth.
He had to know He was quoting Psalm 22:1 and He must have had a reason.
Perhaps it was to call attention to the fact that His enemies at the foot of the cross were fulfilling the prophecy.
At any rate, is it possible that He could have been bewildered?

8. John 1:29-31
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.' I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water."

9. John 1:32-34
And John bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!"

For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

14. 2 Corinthians 5:20-21
Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

We are Christ's ambassadors, and God is using us to speak to you. We urge you, as though Christ himself were here pleading with you, "Be reconciled to God!"
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Therefore we are ambassadors of the Messiah; in effect, and God is making his appeal through us. What we do is appeal on behalf of the Messiah, "Be reconciled to God!
"God made this sinless man be a sin offering on our behalf, so that in union with him we might fully share in God’s righteousness."

17. Hebrews 10:5-7
Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. Then I said, 'Behold, I have come-- In the volume of the book it is written of Me-- To do Your will, O God.' "

18. Hebrews 10:8-9
Previously saying, "Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them" (which are offered according to the law), then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second.

19. Therefore Jesus did not die in my place or yours.
It was His place, and His alone, to die on that cross.
He died on the cross, not as punishment but as a sacrifice for sin.
He did this that we might realize both the enormity of sin and the magnitude of His love and His Father’s love for us and that we might be motivated to love them in return.
