S1 Information Night Block 1 Level 2 Rounding Percentages Time Length and Area Statistics

2 Rounding and Estimating
Key Points For this topic pupils knowledge on place value is vital eg 5768 (5 thousands 7 hundreds 6 tens 8 units) especially when it come to rounding to 100, 1000 etc. To decide how we round follow the rule “5 or more round up, 4 or less round down” Pupils will regularly be practising their times tables as well as having access to times table grids to aid with the work. Pupils are taught the mathematical methods to multiply and divide by 10, 100, 1000 however we enforce the quick method (x10 add a zero , x100 add 2 zeros, x1000 add 3 zeros and vice versa). The quick method is only used for whole numbers.

4 Percentages Key Points
To convert and percentage to a fraction 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 100 then simplify eg 17% = Fractions should be given in their simplest form eg = 1 5 17% as a decimal 0.17, 20% = 0.20 , 4% = 0.04 50% = 1 2 , 20% = , 25%= 1 4 , 10% = 1 10

6 Time Key Points Pupils revise reading time from analogue clocks
Pupils focus on 12hour and 24 hour time

8 Length and Area Key Points
Being able to identify the correct measurement unit and measuring exact lengths in a variety of different units. Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of the shape. Area is the amount of space inside the shape. Area of a Rectangle = Length x Breadth Area of a Triangle = 1 2 x base x height Area is always measured in 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠 2

10 Statistics Key Points Using rulers to draw graphs.
Bar Charts must follow the rule “space – bar – space – bar …” Should be able to interpret and create pictograms
