1
Predicting precipitation reactions
2
Ionic reactions of two solutions are double replacement reactions
The ions switch partners in a double replacement reaction. Ba(ClO3)2 + Ag2SO4 BaSO4 + AgClO3 barium chlorate + silver I sulfate barium sulfate + silver I chlorate (we are not balancing yet)
3
Example Calcium Nitrate and Potassium Phosphate Ca(NO3)2 + K3PO4 ?
It helps to say the names of the ionic compounds Switch partners Calcium Phosphate and Potassium Nitrate Ca3(PO4) KNO3 What ions are these ions? Ca(NO3)2 + K3PO4 Ca3(PO4) KNO3
4
Full Molecular Equation and Net Ionic Equation
Ca(NO3)2 + K3PO4 Ca3(PO4) KNO3 This is the full molecular equation. Write the net ionic equation for this reaction First determine what is soluble and what is insoluble 3 Ca PO43- Ca3(PO4)2
5
DO NOT!!!!! It helps to say the name of the compound because you have to write the appropriate ionic formula. A common mistake is to try and carry the subscript over from the reactant side Ca(NO3)2 + K3PO4 Ca PO K3(NO3)2 The charges don’t cancel out!!!!!
6
Predict the full molecular and net ionic equation between
Copper II acetate and lithium sulfite Ammonium oxalate and cobalt II chloride Aluminum nitrate and sodium carbonate Hydrochloric acid and silver I nitrate
7
Homework Write the full molecular and net ionic equation for
Potassium silicate and iron III nitrate
