2 What is it? There are 3 Characteristics of the Industrial Revolution

3 Economic Changes 1. Industrialization - Our economy changed from one based on agriculture to one based on industry.

4 Demographic Changes 2. Urbanization - People began leaving the country and moving into cities.

3. Innovation - New technology for agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and communication.

6 Where and when it began The Industrial Revolution, in America, began in the North during the War of 1812. The South held on to it’s plantation system

7 Important Innovations

8 The Cotton Gin Before the Industrial Revolution, cotton farming was a pain. Eli Whitney’s cotton gin made separating seeds from cotton easier

9 The Cotton Gin Now cotton farming was easier and more profitable
Of course, this means that the demand for slaves increased

10 Interchangeable Parts
Eli Whitney had a lot of guns to make and little time to do it. His solution, making the parts of an item identical and assemble it later.

11 The Lowell Factory System
Women, working in textile (fabric) mills, lived in factory owned apartments. Young women were supervised by old women. Textile mills hired mostly young women.

12 The Mechanical Reaper Machine cut and caught grain in the field. No longer had to harvest by hand.

13 The Steamboat Robert Fulton’s steamboat provided for faster shipping and the ability to transport goods upstream.

14 The Railroad Steam engine technology was put to use in trains, speeding up land transportation.

15 The Telegraph Samuel Morse invented a machine that could send messages over wires. Using Morse Code, these messages could be sent across the Atlantic Ocean in minutes.
