Outcomes of World War I Friday, February 22, 2019Friday, February 22, 2019
2
League Of Nations It was seen as the major crowning achievement of Versailles BUT it proved ineffective at achieving its goal of peace It was weak 3 major problems
4
1st problem Not all major powers were members of the League
The United States chose not to join They were afraid the League would force them to fight in foreign wars
6
The League had no authority or influence with these nations
Germany and Russia were not allowed to join Germany allowed in 1926 but withdrew in 1933 Russia joined in 1934 The League had no authority or influence with these nations Limited the ability to influence international affairs
7
2nd Problem The League was unable to enforce its orders
It relied on moral persuasion The League could wage war but they… Could only use volunteer troops from member nations ( never happened )
8
3rd Problem It required unanimous consent for decisions
Almost impossible The League never became the international forum for solving disputes among nations
9
Changes on the Map Nationalism needed to be addressed as nations emerged The Allied Powers wanted to weaken those countries of Central & Eastern Europe that fought with the Central Powers
10
They broke up the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman & Persian Empires
Germany lost territory & all overseas possessions Poland was created Russia lost territory Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (peace agreement between Germany & Russia)
