What are meta-skills? ‘…..timeless, higher order skills that create adaptive learners and promote success in whatever context the future brings.’

Why do meta-skills matter?
‘These are the skills that enable individuals to perform highly today; in a changed world of work they will be required by all of us’. ‘To thrive in the 21st century, students need more than traditional academic learning. They must be adept at collaboration, communication and problem-solving, which are some of the skills developed through social and emotional learning (SEL).’

Project purposes To provide a baseline and evidence of distance travelled of an individual’s meta-skills development To test different methodologies of measuring and recording meta-skills in a work-based learning setting To build understanding of the impact of different learning experiences on the development of meta-skills To inform the future development of meta-skills in learning programmes

Approach to assessment
Challenging to assess in a way that is valid, reliable and practicable No ‘right’ answer Triangulation of approaches Focus on raising learners’ awareness of and engagement with meta-skills Generating feedback to be used in a learning discussion
