Precipitation range  Compared to the Pacific, the Atlantic is significantly drier and has fewer extreme values.  Rainfall isn't accurately measured in the ocean  As an estimate the minimum in the southern part of the Pacific ocean  is 80 mm

Temperature Range  Surface water temperatures, which vary with latitude, current systems, and season and reflect the latitudinal distribution of solar energy, range from below −2 °C (28 °F) to over 30 °C (86 °F). Maximum temperatures occur north of the equator, and minimum values are found in the polar regions.

Soil characteristics  There is no soil in the open ocean so therefore there are no characteristics that are important and beneficial to the ocean.

Plant adaptations  Ocean plants have developed adaptations such as the ability to absorb nutrients  from the ability to float and the ability to anchor themselves to rocks on the ocean floor in order to thrive in their challenging environment.  Like land plants, ocean plants derive energy from sunlight. However, land plants also have extensive root systems, which allow them to absorb water and nutrients from soil. Land plants also absorb carbon dioxide from the surrounding air. Sunlight, water and carbon dioxide are necessary for plants to live. But ocean plants do not have extensive root systems, nor are they exposed to air. Instead, they have adapted to absorb all the water and carbon dioxide they need from the water they live in. Of all ocean plant adaptations, this is the most basic.

Animal adaptations  some animals use camouflage to escape detection or to sneak up on their prey animals have coloration which intentionally makes them stand out.  Some animals have dangerous spines or venom for protection Some speices swim only in groups in order to protect themselves from a common predator They use their gills to breathe instead of lungs Some animals have blow holes, in which they can come up for air and breathe very frequently when needed.

Special characteristics
One characteristic of water is that it is a superb solvent, meaning that other substances, such as minerals, can dissolve quickly and easily into it. The ocean has many movements, the ocean tides, waves and currents.  The ocean ecosystems contain a unique and multi-part food chain that is comprised of thousands of creatures. Creatures of all sizes are found within the ocean ecosystem. The ocean has been losing oxygen over the previous century, a trend that is predicted to continue under global warming and is likely to stress many marine animals.
