Outline Splittable quadrupole milestones Quadrupole parameters and concept Magnet design modifications Program support activity SLAC and NML stands FY10 quadrupole fabrication plan FY10 SLAC stand commissioning plan FY10 plan vs. funds Summary ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

3 Splittable Quadrupole Task & Milestones
Task from ILC Project Management: Design and manufacture Splittable Quadrupole to provide the quadrupole package installation and replacement outside of a very clean room. Milestones: Magnetic, mechanical, thermal design. Quadrupole drawings. Parts order. Quadrupole manufacturing. Test stand commissioning Quadrupole test. ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

4 ILC Quadrupole Specification
ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

5 Quadrupole Mechanical Concept
It was chosen the quadrupole design with racetrack coils which easy to split in vertical or horizontal direction. ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

7 Quadrupole Package Modifications
The quadrupole structure must be mechanically stable to avoid magnetic center shift during excitation. Current leads should be modified to provide operation in a conduction cooling mode. Easy magnet assembly and disassembly. Modify the coil bobbins for better conduction cooling. Provide good thermal passes from coils and core to the LHe supply line. Provide coil temperature monitoring. ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

8 Program Support Activity
SLAC Test Stand relocation, modification, and commissioning at FNAL. Test Quadrupole center stability using upgraded stretch wire stand and technique. Upgrade the NML Horizontal Test Stand for the quadrupole test in a conduction cooling mode at 2 K. Built Stand for high precision magnetic measurements with horizontal warm bore working in a conduction cooling mode. Building high precision rotational coil measurement system for 2K cryostat. ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

9 SLAC 4.2K Stand Relocation to FNAL in FY10
Cryostat 4.2 K LHe Power supplies and control system Relocate ILC Quadrupole Test Stand from SLAC to FNAL. SLAC stand commissioning at FNAL. Upgrade stand cryostat to simplify assembly with the magnet. Test the ILC Quadrupole center stability by stretch wire. ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

10 FNAL NML SCRF 2K Test Stand
Cryostat 2K LHe 1.3 GHz cavity FNAL NML SCRF Horizontal cryostat could be used for Quadrupole test in a conduction cooling mode at 2 K. Add current leads, instrumentation, and power supplies. There is no room temperature bore for magnetic measurements. ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009

Summary The splittable quadrupole could be built in FY10 with 200 k$ funds. For the quadrupole will be used parts and superconductor which we planned to use for ILC HGQ02 model. Aluminum bobbins fabricated for HGQ02 is a good choice for Splittable Quadrupole also. Help of SLAC’s specialists will be very useful during stand upgrade and commissioning. Negotiations with SCRF team should be done to test the magnet in a conduction cooling mode. Minor stand upgrade will be needed. Cooperate with Project-X, NML and investigate possibility of using splittable magnets there. The concept of new Universal cryostat for magnet test could be designed and purchase order placed in industry. ALCPG 2009, Albuquerque, October 1, 2009
