3 EA2.1: Historical Research
Your assignment is to research the historical, cultural, social, or geographical context of To Kill A Mockingbird and investigate how individuals, organizations, and events contributed to change in the United States during the Civil Rights Movement. You will work collaboratively to create an oral presentation of your findings with multimedia support and guiding questions for your audience. (size 24)

4 Step 1: Choose a Topic Status of Women/Women’s Roles
Education & Schools Economic Concerns Status of African Americans The Great Depression Class Divisions in the South Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidency Supreme Court Case: Plessy v. Ferguson Other ___________________________

5 Step 2: Research Questions
Generate four to six research questions to guide your investigation. Include at least one of each of the following: A question that explores a cause by setting the context: What factors influenced what life was like for African Americans in Birmingham Alabama, before the Civil Rights Movement? What factors led to the Great Depression? A question that explores your subject: What were sit-ins, and where did they take place? What was the status of women during the 1930s? A question that explores an effect by evaluating the change: How did the “Freedom Riders” help enforce anti segregation laws? How did FDR bring America out of the Great Depression?

6 Step 3: Assign Questions
Assign a different research question to each group member. Write the name of the group member next to the question in Step 2.

7 Step 4: Get Signed Off ➨ KWilliamson
Get your research questions and plan signed off by Mrs. Williamson: ➨ KWilliamson

8 Step 5: Research Each person must find TWO different sources.
Sources should be .org .gov or .edu if possible. Print each article/source (be sure you have all information necessary for a bibliography) Write your name at the top of each of your articles. Read and annotate each article (Highlight and make notes: Define, Summarize, Clarify, Question, Respond, Connect). Your annotated articles will be submitted.

9 Step 6: Slideshow Formatting:
Color of background and color of font. Choose colors that are complementary and easy to read. Size of font and pictures. Choose a size that can be seen by all people in the room. Use bullets to organize information. Do NOT include paragraphs. Be prepared to say MORE than what is on each slide. The information on the slide is only a guide. Avoid using yellow :)

11 Content Slides Content Slides: Individual
Each group member will be responsible for at least two slides. Each slide should contain BOTH words/content and a visual. The slides should be in this order CAUSE slide should be first. SUBJECT slide(s) should be next. EFFECT slide should be last.

12 Works Cited Title this slide Works Cited
Each person in the group will be responsible for citing the sources for their contributions. At the end of the citation, please include your initials in ( ). Each person should include at least two citations.

13 Step 7: The Presentation
Presentations will occur on Monday, November 23rd Wednesday, November 25th Each student will present his own slide. Students do not need to present the Works Cited Slide. You will also be graded on your ability to communicate clearly and knowledgably about your topic. So be sure to practice :) And make note cards if you need to. And practice :) THANKSGIVING

14 Step 8: The Grade One person in each group will need to share the slideshow with Mrs. Williamson to be graded. Each person will be responsible for turning in their own annotated research to be graded.
