1 Level 3 Award in Pre / Post Natal Exercise Programming Design

2 Aims of the session By the end of the session the learner should have an understanding of Pre-natal exercise prescription.

3 Learning Outcomes By then end of the session the learner should be able to List 2 exercise do’s & 2 exercise don’ts relating to pre-natal clients

4 Introduction Each pregnant client should be treated as an individual specific to needs, Therefore a fitness professional must gather sufficient, accurate information regarding the clients health and exercise history.

5 Introduction The information gathering phase is also a key time to identify if there is a need for referral, Any contra-indications identified previously, you need to refer to a medical professional for advice, Each expectant mother is an individual, so before an effective prescription can be made, a number of points must be considered.

6 Introduction Regarding exercise design, please consider the following points; In which stage of pregnancy is the woman? 2. How experienced is the individual, and what are her exercise capabilities, Why would this need to be considered,

7 Stage of pregnancy Why should the stage of pregnancy be important ?

8 Stage of pregnancy recap
This will affect how she feels, Less than 16 weeks, abdominal bumps & bruises harming the pregnancy is slim, Effects the benefits she can expect to achieve, For example; Early – improves growth of baby, decreases maternal symptoms, Late – maintains fitness, limits weight gain, & shortens labour.

9 Previous exercise How experienced is the individual, and what are her exercise capabilities, Why would this need to be considered ?

10 Previous exercise Healthy clients who were active prior to conception usually can maintain that level of fitness to a degree, Clients with a sedentary history should be careful and progress slowly and perform to a low intensity programme.

11 Previous exercise Completion of a risk assessment is advisable, This needs adapting for the Individual depending upon their; Trimester, Type of activity planned, Use of any fitness equipment, Inherent risks associated to the environment, in which they are to train.

12 Individualising a Programme
There are also a number of do’s and don’ts we can identify, which provide a good starting point when individualising a programme, Think about what things you might avoid, and what things you would / could do for a pregnant woman.

13 Pre-natal exercise DO’s
Focus on things other than performance, such as developing an improved sense of well-being, Make sure the volume of exercise is enough, 20minutes at a moderately hard RPE is the minimum for most healthy women of reproductive age, If it feel’s good, it probably ok, mothers should use a common sense approach.

14 Pre-natal exercise DO’s
Always monitor and review, Make sure they have adequate hydration, Appropriate rest periods, Adequate nutrition – regular meals etc, Prompt attention to any discomfort, These are equally as important as the exercise itself.

15 Pre-natal exercise DON’Ts
Pregnancy is a vulnerable time for a woman and care must still be taken, List as many things that you feel you would not do with them;

16 Pre-natal exercise DON’Ts
Pregnancy is a vulnerable time for a woman and care must still be taken, the following needs consideration; Don’t do anything without thinking it through, Don’t continue if exercise produces pain, Don’t ignore fatigue, Don’t exercise to exhaustion.

17 Pre-natal exercise DON’Ts
Pregnancy is a vulnerable time for a woman and care must still be taken, the following needs consideration; Don’t exercise in a prone position after the first trimester, compresses the vena cava, resulting in dizziness, numbness & reduced oxygen to the foetus, Don’t exercise in hot or humid conditions.

18 Pre-natal exercise DON’Ts
Mum knows best, so when exercising, she should listen to her own body and as instructors, We should not push them more than they want to do!

19 Pre-natal exercise It’s important to be able to offer some guidelines for exercise that are relevant to each trimester of pregnancy, Each pregnancy can vary and that the following information is only a guide, Timelines may not always match.
