These shots started the Civil War

4. First Battle
The first Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) was the first major battle
The South won the battle
Stonewall Jackson was the winning Confederate General

5. Battle of Vicksburg Battle fought in Vicksburg, Mississippi
The North won and got control of the Mississippi River
This battle divided the South (because the North controlled the river)

6. Battle of Gettysburg Robert E. Lee invaded the North
The North controlled the hills and high ground in Gettysburg
The North won the battle by repelling the South
Became the turning point of the war

7. Appomattox Court House
Robert E. Lee (CSA) surrendered to Ulysses Grant (USA) in 1865 to end the war
The South lost the Civil War

8. Emancipation Proclamation
Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves
This made the focus of the war become about freeing slaves
Many freed slaves joined the Union army
