Definition kL cL mL L Volume is the amount of space something takes up, or the amount of space something can contain. (your locker for example) Click the image to watch a short video about volume. * When referring to water Liter Image:

Tools We use a metric ruler or meter stick to measure the volume of regular shaped solid object using the formula length x width x height. 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ 10cm 8cm 9cm 720 cm3

4 Tools Cont. We use graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other irregular shaped objects. Top Image: Bottom Image:

5 Units kL cL mL L The base unit of volume for liquids and gases in the metric system in the liter and is represented by L or l (L = liter). Metric Units Liter = L Mililiter = mL L= 1000 mL The base unit for the volume of solids is meters cubed or m3 Which is larger? 1 mL = 1 cm3 A. 1 liter or 1500 milliliters B. 200 milliliters or 1.2 liters C. 12 cm3 or 1.2 milliliters* * When referring to water Liter Image:

6 How to Measuring Liquid Volume
Just pour and read!!! Pour the liquid in a graduated cylinder. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL Images created at 43 What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides.

7 How to Measure Regular Solid Volume
Just measure and multiply!!! 10 cm We use a metric ruler or meter stick to measure the volume of regular shaped solid object using the formula length x width x height. _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ 10cm 10cm 10cm 1000 cm3

8 How To - Measuring Irregular Solid Volume
Just see how much water it pushes out of the way!!! With water and a graduated cylinder, we can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Volume of H2O with object = ______ (minus) Volume of H2O only = ______ = Objects Volume = ______ 260mL 200mL 60mL Click here for an online activity about volume. Choose Lessons  Volume & Displacement

9 Now take what you've learned and go practice!
