1 -the 3 methods of heat transfer
Light Bulb Dissection -the 3 methods of heat transfer TEACHER NOTES below Materials per student: sheet of copy paper. -wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a lamp on hand you could turn on Steps: As shown above, have students draw a line about halfway down their paper. We’ll only using the upper half for this activity. Draw the line helps them with spacing. Title the top (…steps continue in Notes area of next slide) Draw a line about 2/3 of the theway down

2 -the 3 methods of heat transfer
Light Bulb Dissection -the 3 methods of heat transfer 3. 2. 1. 1. Radiation is… (definition) Heat transfers from the filament to the glass through a partial vacuum. 2. Conduction is… (definition) Anything TOUCHING the hot glass will transfer heat. Have students draw the light bulb as shown. No rush- this is a very simple/straightforward lesson, so give them plenty of time to do this. For each of the 3 methods of heat transfer, we’ll note where it’s at on the bulb with a number, then explain to the right the method, a definition (have students dig this out, and keep it short), and an explanation of how it works in this example. NOTES: The purpose of drawing the line 2/3 of the way down is to help students with spacing things out properly. Give them too much, or too little, room, and they have trouble putting things where they’re supposed to go, and they spend too much energy thinking about that instead of the content. Change any words on this you like. I also used this as a Friday quiz; had my students do it from memory on their own sheet of paper. How I finished my definitions- Radiation- the transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves Conduction- the transfer of energy through touch Convection- the transfer of energy through a fluid 3. Convection is… (definition) Heated air spreads and rises, while cooler air moves in below.
