Vegetation

Defining Vegetation This is a (1)general term for the plant life of a (2)region It refers to the ground cover provided by(3)plants The term vegetation does not, by itself, imply anything regarding (4)species composition, life forms, structure, It is broader than the term(5) flora which refers (6)exclusively to species composition. Perhaps the closest synonym is (7)plant community.

The Term Vegetation Includes:
(8)Redwood forests (9)Desert soil crusts (10)Roadside weed patches (11)Wheat fields (12)Cultivated gardens (13)Lawns all are encompassed by the term vegetation.

Forests This is an area with a (14) high density of trees.
Many (15) definitions of a forest exist They are one of the most important aspects of the (16) earth’s biosphere. (17) Mature forests do play an important role in the global carbon cycle as (18) stable carbon pools

Tropical Rain Forest Rainforests are characterized by(19) high rainfall, with normal annual rainfall from(20) 67 inches to (21) 78 inches. The soil can be (22) poor because high rainfall tends to leach out (23) soluble nutrients. Rain forests are home to (24) two-thirds of all the living (25) animal and (26) plant species on the planet.

Shrub Forest These are located in the (27) mild Mediterranean climates of the world These are the (28) opposite of rainforests because of the (29) lack of substantial rainfall The trees are (30) small due to the lack of water (31) Bushes and shrubs are common

Coniferous Forest Coniferous forests are made up mainly of (32) cone-bearing or coniferous trees These include the following: (33) Spruces (34) Hemlocks (35) Pines (36) Firs These trees have small (37) needle-like leaves that stay green (38) all year around They have (39)shallow root systems, and soft wood. Coniferous forests are found mainly in the (40)northern hemisphere, although some are found in the southern hemisphere.

Deciduous Forest These forests can be found in the eastern half of (41)North America, and the middle of Europe. There are many deciduous forests in (42) Asia. Some of the major areas that they are in are southwest Russia, (43) Japan, and eastern China. South America has (44)two big areas of deciduous forests in southern (45) Chile and Middle East coast of (46) Paraguay. (47) New Zealand, and southeastern (48) Australia also have these types of forests.

Grasslands A grassland is a region where the average annual (49) precipitation is great enough to support grasses, and in some areas a few (50)trees. The precipitation is so erratic that (51)drought and fire prevent large forests from growing. Grasses can survive fires because they grow from the (52)bottom instead of the top.
