4 Turn and Talk What makes something a situation, joke or television/movie) funny? Explain.

5 Humor Authors use certain techniques to create humor in their work.
Take out your foldable with your humor terms Review the definitions of high and low comedy. Sort the vocabulary into one (1) of two (2) categories- high comedy or low comedy

6 Humor Vocabulary Use dictionary.com, google or Wikipedia to define the humor terms on your resource sheet. The completion of this handout will count as your grade! You will create a foldable of the humor vocabulary to use throughout the unit. Write the word on one side and the definition on the other.

7 Situational Humor When a story places a character in an unlikely situation in which he or she obviously does not belong

8 Physical Mishap Collisions, slapstick, and pratfalls

9 Coincidence A remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection Example: Two exes end up at the same party

14 Malaproprisms The confusion of two words that sound alike but mean different things Example: Rainy weather can be hard on the sciences. (sinuses)

15 Puns A deliberate play on words or well-known expressions that carry a double meaning

16 One Liners/Punch Lines
A short joke or witty remark/ the final phrase of a joke that provides the humor

17 Hyperbole Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally

18 Sorting Activity Read the differences between high comedy and low comedy. Then, sort the elements of humor into each category.
