2 Jeremiah 31:31-34 “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:”

3 (32) Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:”

4 (33) But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

5 (34) And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

(4) The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire, (5) (I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;)”

What is the historical background? Who are the parties involved in this covenant? What terms are used here & elsewhere to describe this covenant and what is meant by these terms? Where & when was the covenant originally made? With whom was the covenant made, i.e., who are the people amenable to the covenant? With whom was the covenant not made?

20 This Covenant? Deut.5:3 “not…with our fathers” “but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day;” These who constitute the nation at this time are the Israelite nation who had entered into the covenant with the Lord at Sinai.

21 Who + When? From the time the covenant was given on Mount Sinai,
all generations of Israelites were amenable to the Law, so long as it was in effect. Israel was accountable to God to keep it until He made a new covenant not like this one (Jeremiah 31:31-34).

An agreement, contract, or pact made between two parties binding them together. Statutes & judgments - Deut. 5:1 Law - Deut. 4:44 Testimonies - Deut.4:45 Commandments - Deut.5:10

23 What Was The Purpose Of The Law?
“It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator,” Galatians 3:19
