2
To be able to evaluate expressions containing exponents.
Today’s Objective To be able to evaluate expressions containing exponents.
3
The exponent is sometimes referred to as the power
Vocabulary Exponent 46 Base The exponent is sometimes referred to as the power
4
What is the meaning of 46 ? 46 means to multiply the base 4 by itself 6 times.
5
The meaning of the exponent:
1.) 46 = 444444 2.) 43 = 444 3.) 41 = 4 4.) 40 = ?
6
The meaning of the exponent:
If 8/4 = 2, then we can say that 23/ 22 = 21. So if 4/4 = 1,we can say that 22/ 22 = 20, therefore 20 must EQUAL 1. 4.) 40 = 1 5.) 4-1 = 1/4
7
As the exponent gets smaller, what do you notice about the answer?
Fill - in the chart 5.) 20 = 6.) 2-1 = 7.) 2-2 = 1/4 8.) 2-3 = 1.) 24 = 2.) 23 = 8 3.) = 4 4.) 21 = As the exponent gets smaller, what do you notice about the answer?
8
Fill - in the chart 5.) 20 = 1 6.) 2-1 = 1/2 7.) 2-2 = 1/4 8.) 2-3 = 1/8 1.) 24 = 16 2.) 23 = 8 3.) 22 = 4 4.) 21 = 2
9
Evaluate the following expressions with exponents
1.) n3 when n =4 43 = 444 = 64 43 = 64
10
Evaluate the following expressions with exponents
2.) 15 + x2 when x = 5 15 + 55 = 40
11
Evaluate the following expressions with exponents
3.) (3a + 6b)2 when a = 1 & b = 2 (3(1) + 6(2))2 (3 + 12)2 (15)2 225
12
Evaluate the following expressions with exponents
4.) 2x3 and (2x)3 when x = 4 2(43) and (2•4)3 2(64) and (8)3 and 512
13
Closure 1.) What’s the difference between an expression and an equation? 2.) What the difference between a term and a factor?
14
Closure - Name the following
What’s this? What’s this? 2 4
15
Closure - Name the following
3x + 2 1.) is 3 a factor or term? 2.) What is the 2 called? 3.) Is 3x a factor or a term? 4.) Is 3x + 2 an expression or an equation?
