The Galapagos Finches The Island Daphne Major, Galapagos.(Photo, Kenneth D. Bergman) For more than 30 years, scientists have been studying the populations of finches and their ecosystem on one very tiny island: Daphne Major. The island is small enough that the scientists have been able to directly observe a large proportion of the birds that live on the island. Intro from:

Death and Survival in the Galapagos
Scientists saw the same thing you did…. Beginning in 1976 and continuing through 1977, a large majority of the finches died. The scientists investigated this important change in the finch population. They asked these two questions: Why are so many finches dying? Why are some of the finches able to survive?
6
Studies of the Galapagos Finches
An important part of studying populations is understanding how individuals vary from one another. To examine this, the scientists were able to place colored bands on the birds' legs so they could tell them apart.
7
Studies of the Galapagos Finches
What is some data that scientist might gather to figure out why finches are dying and what are allowing some to survive?

Studies of the Galapagos Finches
Physical characteristics Behavior of the birds Mating Foraging for food Evading predators. To study the birds' interactions with other species, they tracked the vegetation and predators on the island.

72R Question 1: What caused the ground finch population to decline?
Claim: The ground finch population declined after 1977 because . . . Evidence: (any data relating to why the finch population declined) The data shows (include numbers or data here) The graph shows (include numbers or data here) Reasoning: The finches population declined because . . .

Expected Student Response (proficient)
Claim: The ground finch population declined after 1977 because there was less rainfall causing a lack of food for the finches. Evidence: The rainfall measurement graph shows there was no rainfall in the dry season of 1976, only 25 cm in the wet season of 1976, and no rainfall in the dry season of The plants that were affected were cactus that saw a decline in number of seeds produced after dry 1976 from 230 seeds to dry 1977 had 20 seeds. Chamaesyce had 21 seeds in 1976 but in dry 1977 there were no seeds. Portulaca had 130 seeds in 1976 but they declined to none during dry 1977. Reasoning: The data shows that there was little rain which caused plants to produce less seeds. With less seeds produced, the finches food supply was limited which caused many finches to die of starvation.
