1 10.1 Cell Growth, Division, & Reproduction

2 Q: What are some of the difficulties a cell faces as it increases in size?
A: 1.The larger a cell becomes, the more demands the cell places on its DNA. In addition, 2.a larger cell is less efficient in moving nutrients and waste materials across the cell membrane.

3 Limits to cell size Information overload (DNA) Exchanging materials
Ratio of surface area to volume (like traffic problems)

4 Cell Division- divides into two new daughter cells

5 2 ways a cell reproduces:
Asexual-genetically identical offspring from single parent. (ex: budding)

6 Sexual Reproduction- 2 parents & inherit some of their genetic info. Leads to more Genetic Variation

7 Comparing Asexual Good for single cells. Can happen quickly.
Bad if environment changes. Sexual Provides genetic diversity. Takes time to find a mate. If environment changes, offspring may survive.
