GIFTED GAZETTE 3.5 Jan. 29th – Feb.2nd What we’re learning this week… Test Schedule Reading: This week we will… read through Chapter 12 in Because of Winn Dixie use a nonfiction text about unlikely friends, and identify the main idea, key details, and point of view. read self-selected novels about friendship in Literature Circles Language/Writing/Vocabulary: This week we will… use a mentor sentence to apply grammar skills with concentration on simple, compound, and complex sentences Unit 4 Vocabulary Workshop research inventions of African Americans and write about how those inventions have influenced our lives. (a few students will be selected to read their essays on morning announcements in February:) conduct practice interviews with classmates and summarize Spelling: utilize dictionary/thesaurus/dictionary.com references and refer to list of “non-negotiable” words in writing portfolio Math: This week we will… compare fractions and explain equivalent fractions <, >, = by drawing a model and using benchmark fractions on a number line represent and compare fractions on a number line diagram Project of the Week (P.O.W.): due Friday Research: “Friendship Interview” Project due Thursday 2/8. Please keep track of assignment due dates on the back of directions sheet. Eager beavers can turn in assignments early! Expectations are going home with your child today. Reading: Cold-Read comprehension test with short-answer question on FRIDAY Orange Vocabulary Workshop: Unit 4 multiple choice test FRIDAY Language: Mentor Sentence Assessment with concentration on identifying simple, compound, and complex sentences on Thursday Spelling: Assessed through writing. Students are expected to consult dictionaries, peer editors, computer resources, and “non-negotiable” words to monitor spelling when writing. Math: multiplication Facts 1-12 speed test test on improper fractions, comparing fractions, and fractions on a number line Thursday Please study multiplication facts nightly, especially if your child is not fluent with 1-12 multiplication facts (3- second rule). Fluency with multiplication facts is a critical goal in third grade math. Our goal for Friday’s test is 25 problems in 1 minute and 40 seconds to achieve mastery. Try using mathfactspro.com or mathfactscafe.com for nightly fluency practice.
