GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS [ GIS] LESSON 2
3
IN THIS LESSON WE GOING TO LOOK AT Components of GIS Remote Sensing Types of Remote Sensing Applications of Remote Sensing
4
There are 4 basic components of GIS
Hardware – Hardware is the equipment used to measure store and display GIS data. Eg. Computers, GPS devices , ipads ,tablets. Software – Software relates to the computer programs used to store manipulate and analyze the data.
5
Data – Information used to model the real world in GIS
Data – Information used to model the real world in GIS. All data is geographically referenced . Store according to co-ordinates Spatial data – Data that describes shape and location of geographic features. Attribute data- Additional data that is descriptive about a point on the map.
6
User- The user refers to the people or person who are involved in the GIS process and solve geographical problems. Eg. Geographers (GIS Analysts) Exercise 1. List the different components that make up GIS. 2. Differentiate between spatial and attribute Data
7
COMPONENTS OF GIS
9
Remote Sensing - Remote sensing refers to data that is obtained away from the source .
10
TYPES OF REMOTE SENSING
Remote Sensing data is captured by recording different wavelengths or frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum that are emitted by the Earths surface. ACTIVE REMOTE SENSING ACTIVE REMOTE SENSORS SEND A SIGNAL TO THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH AND RECORD HOW IT IS REFLECTED BACK EG. RADAR AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY PASSIVE REMOTE SENSING PASSIVE REMOTE SENSING INVOLVES USING AN INSTRUMENT TO RECORD THE RADIATION REFLECTED FROM THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH. EG. A CAMERA RECORDING VISIBLE LIGHT REFLECTED FROM THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH
11
ACTIVE and PASSIVE REMOTE SENSING
12
APPLICATIONS OF REMOTE SENSING
Remote sensing allows Geographers to study dangerous or inaccessible areas from a distance. It provides unique information about Earths surface that cannot be obtained by other means. Exercise Explain what remote sensing is Describe the difference between active and passive remote sensing.
