Brief history Mandate approved in May 2011 by ESSC
Members: 6 NSIs (DE, FR, IT, LV, HU, NL) and Eurostat Duration two years Regular reporting to ESSC and PG Communication to other groups (e.g. DIME) Kick-Off meeting September 2011, Brussels Second meeting January 2012, Budapest Third meeting July 2012, Riga Fourth meeting November 2012, Wiesbaden 2

PoW 2012: Stocktaking Pillar proposals (Chair HU, members FR, LV, NL and Eurostat)
ESS interpretation of ISO/IEC definition of standard Types of ‘normative documents’ to be distinguished (legislation, standards, recommendations) Structure of inventory for normative documents Template for description of normative documents (attributes describe status, owner etcetera) Follow-up work by ESSNet Standardisation (including filling the inventory) 3

PoW 2012: Framework Pillar proposals (Chair IT, members ES, HU, NL, SE and Eurostat)
Overarching architectural framework (four areas: policy, design, management, implementation) Standardisation scenarios (from minimal standardisation to full integration of processes) SWOT instrument (qualitative merits/costs assessment) Process for standards adoption, support and governance (including proposal for responsible bodies) 4

PoW 2012: Pilots Pillar Did not materialize due to lack of resources
Counter measures: Standardisation process proposal transferred to Framework pillar (see previous slide) Census HUB evaluation early 2013 Further case studies part of ESSNet work (e.g. What worked in the past and what not? What would we need to get GSIM working?) 5

Next steps- considerations
Based on discussions at latest Sponsorship meeting (Wiesbaden, November 2012) Context has changed: ESS-VIP programme and HLG-BAS proposals have changed the landscape Focus of further Sponsorship activities on communication and validation of current set of strategic results Operational work to be done by upcoming ESSNet on Standardisation 6
